Provenance
From the estate of Beatrice and Cecil Gunthorp.
This delicate portrait of an unknown young woman from the mid-1920s was painted by Beatrice Gunthorp (1898-1991). She was from Rhyl in Flintshire, and studied at the Royal Academy Schools where she presumably met her husband, also an artist, Cecil Gunthorp. In 1926 Beatrice exhibited a portrait of a member of her husband’s family at the Royal Academy - “Mrs William Gunthorp”, and it’s possible this is it. Beatrice herself seems to have been tangentially related to the artist, John Byam Shaw.
