Daphne Maugham was a Slade trained artist who also studied painting in Paris, attending the Académie Rason, run by Nabis artists Paul Sérusier and Maurice Denis, and from 1918-1921 at the Accadémie Nôtre-Dame des Champs under the Cubist painter André Lhote.
She was the niece of the writer Somerset Maugham and on her mother's side came from an illustrious line of artists. Her mother Mabel Maugham, known as “Beldy”, was a textile artist whose fabric genre scenes were displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and Jeu de Paume in Paris, and her grandfather was the successful painter of hunting scenes, Heywood Hardy. She was also descended from the Regency portraitist, Sir William Beechey.
Daphne was one of three rather Bohemian sisters - Clarisse was also a painter, while her other sister Cynthia was a dancer in the troupe of Alexander Sakharoff. Through Cynthia, Daphne met her Italian artist husband, Felice Casorati (1884-1963), with whom she went to study in 1925. She ultimately married and moved with him to Turin.
