Italo-Scottish School, 1932

Head of a Woman  *SOLD*

oil on canvas

50.8 x 40 cm.

inscribed verso ‘Ottobre 15/ 1932’

Provenance

Private collection, Glasgow

This striking portrait has traditionally been identified as being by an artist who studied at the Glasgow School of Art. The inscription on the reverse of the canvas is in Italian, and indeed the sitter looks Mediterranean. However, there was a large Italian diaspora in Glasgow at that time which continues today, with many Italian-Scots whose roots were established there in the 1890s when they fled famine-stricken Italy, and between the wars, when Glasgow hosted the third largest Italian community in the UK.
