Ethel Harker studied at Chester School of Art and served with the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) in northern France during WWI, providing nursing care for British military personnel and avidly sketching war scenes on site.

She was a prolific watercolourist and exhibited both at the Royal Academy and locally with the Liverpool Artists (Corporation of Liverpool).
