Reginald James Lloyd
(Hereford 1926-2020 Devon)
Devonshire Landscape with House
ink, watercolour and wax resist crayon on paper
signed and dated lower right 'RJLloyd 1953'
This is an early work by the aritst, whose first solo show was held in 1950 at Dawlish in Devon. He was largely self-taught but took part-time classes at Exeter School of Art. At the time he was good friends with the sculptor Henry Moore, who encouraged him to paint. His work can be found in the collections of Tate, the V&A, the National Maritime Museum, Teignbridge Council and Bruton Art Gallery in Bideford. As a life-long friend of the poet Ted Hughes he illustrated four of Hughes' books of poems, including The Cat and the Cuckoo.
